I let the truth of my confession seep into the air before I looked at my mother straight in the face.
 
"You left me no other choice. You knew how badly I wanted to go with Cece to Paris for the summer, this is simply my retaliation for not being able to go."
 
My mother didn't meet my gaze as she tried to straighten out her already perfectly pressed blouse even more than what it already was. I took the silence in triumphantly and got up from the sofa that I had been confined to for the past twenty minutes as mommy dearest interrogated me about last night's events.
 
The truth was, I hadn't really wanted to do it. They had basically forced me to come to these extremes. Not letting me go to Paris with my best friend since practically childbirth simply because she had just gotten out rehab was no excuse. Cece was clean now, she had promised. Just like I had promised that I wasn't going to bring along any little "celebration gifts" either.
 
Of course my mother wasn't going to have it because several women from the Candle Lit Committee had already made their observations and complaints clear about how obviously "reckless and irresponsible" Cece had become since her mother's death just a year ago. And since the approval of this stupid old group of women was all my mother really cared about, her mind had been made up. My father hated arguing with my family if it interfered with his work, so that was that.
 
I was to spend my summer attending "Lady Lessons" with Ms. Rose the ninety-year old virgin and staying as far away from Cecile Dempsey as possible.
 
My response?
 
I slept with the husband of Ms. Parish, a member from my mother's committee.
 
Just as I was about to make my way completely out of the commons room and head to my own, my mother's voice startled me.
 
God. Weren't we done already??
 
"You are to have your bags packed by dinner. Rufus will be waiting for you to load your bags and put them in the car. You're going to Great Britain."
